I guess we really know now why coach’s favorite response about Julian Lewis is “coming around the mountain”.
I’m having some flashbacks of young promising QB, Brendan Lewis, who showed flashes of being an electric QB (Alamo Bowl), but once he lost his confidence it was ugly. Not saying Julian is there yet, but he looks like a shell of the guy on that last drive against GT.
I was talking with a friend earlier who didn’t go that in depth, but also brought up Brendon Lewis…
Hoping the coaches can script something for Saturday that gets Julian’s confidence going
Yeah, it would be nice to see Lewis find his footing against a conference opponent. Wonder if it would take different play calling, or if it’s him that needs to make the adjustments. I only say that because Marion seemed more comfortable with Wilson throwing the ball down the field than Lewis, and I’m not sure if Lewis is having a harder time fitting what Marion needs him to do or if the offense is demanding differently than what he can do. Basically, capable or being misused? And if it’s neither, then I guess CU will go a different direction.
When you look back at the GoGo historically, JuJu skill set doesn’t translate well. I personally believe he is a more capable runner than he is willing to run, however QB run is a part of this offense. When that is taken away, you lose part of the scheme. Vertical passing is a big part of the offense as well and then that is not available then you become fairly limited. Running game has been solid, but behind the line of scrimmage passing does not force the defense to react or change. None of this is a knock on JuJu and at the same time, he hasn’t shown anything other than being a highly rated recruit that he is ready or capable to lead a P4 offense at this stage. Wilson skill set and willingness to throw it downfield opens more of the playbook and system. His past record wasn’t the best by any means but he has played in this league so it is not like you are making the move to someone with no experience. All be it limited he has it and when he was at Utah, their system had some similar components as the GoGo. Now, how will it translate against a top tier defense, probably will be a heavy lift for any QB on the CU roster. I personally have cautious optimism in that the offense can be more efficient with Wilson at QB, however it might not translate the next few games based on the quality of the defenses the other two teams have.
